The No. 8 Nebraska rifle team is in eighth place at the NCAA Championships after shooting a 2,317 in the smallbore on Friday.

Four-time All-American Cecelia Ossi shot a 591 in the preliminary rounds to qualify for the finals for the second straight year. During the finals, Ossi, the defending national champion in the event, shot a 407.5 to place eighth.

“Tomorrow is a new day on the range,” Head Coach Mindy Miles said. “Today was disappointing but we will move onto the next match. The last match of the season is a last chance to post some good team and individual scores in air.”

Ossi’s 591 led the Huskers on Friday, while Mackenzie Strauch (577), Emma Rhode (576), Charlie Mick (573) and Camilla Johannessen (571) finished out the lineup.

West Virginia sits in first with a 2,353 after day one, while TCU is in second with a 2,347 and Kentucky is in third with a 2,338. Alaska-Fairbanks (2,337, fourth), Air Force (2,333, fifth), Navy (2,330, sixth), Ole Miss (2,328, seventh) and NU (2,317, eighth) round out the field.

The Big Red will return to action tomorrow, March 9, for the air rifle starting at 8 a.m. (central) in Morgantown, W.V.
