Huskers Look to Bounce Back Against Penn State

The Nebraska women’s gymnastics team (4-4, 2-2 Big Ten) returns home to compete against the No. 23 Penn State Nittany Lions (5-3, 1-3 Big Ten) on Saturday, Feb. 17 starting at 7 p.m. (CT) at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The meet will be streamed on B1G+ and live scoring can be found here.

This weekend’s meet is the Huskers’ annual Pink Meet, where gymnasts will compete for a cause. Project Pink’d is teaming up with Nebraska to promote breast cancer awareness, and NU will be giving away pink pom-poms and tiaras while supplies last. Doors will open at 6 p.m. (CT) for fans.

The Big Red owns a 44-11 lead in the series with Penn State and won last season’s matchup with a score of 196.275-196.200.

Last Time Out

Nebraska traveled to College Park, Md., and lost to the No. 25 Maryland Terrapins, 196.675-196.125.

Despite the loss, the Huskers claimed four event titles – Martina Comin won vault (9.900), Kinsey Davis earned the bars victory (9.975), Sophia McClelland claimed the beam (9.875) and Emma Spence won the all-around (39.350). Davis’ bars score also tied her career high, and NU posted its highest bars total of the season with a 49.425.

Whitney Jencks earned a career-high 9.875 on the bars, while Isabel Sikon matched her career high of 9.800 on vault.

Scouting the Competition

Penn State is currently ranked No. 23 in the Road to Nationals poll. PSU averages a 196.175 on the season, with a high score of 197.025. The Nittany Lions are 5-3 overall, with a 1-3 mark in conference competition.

Their wins came against Penn, Temple, Pitt, No. 24 Iowa State and Rutgers, and they have losses to No. 10 Michigan State, No. 15 Minnesota and No. 13 Ohio State.

Penn State’s all-around competitors include Ava Piedrahita, Kaela McElligott and Maddie Johnston.
