Nebraska track and field closed the second day of the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational with a Devaney Center Indoor Track record, four all-time marks and four marks inside the top-10 of the NCAA.
Till Steinforth topped the heptathlon standings with an NCAA-leading 6,097 points. Entering Saturday, Steinforth had 3,452 points after winning the 60m (6.80) and long jump (25-0 3/4, 7.64m) portions on Friday. He added solid shot put (46-8 1/4, 14.23m) and high jump (6-6, 1.98m) marks to put him in good position entering Saturday. Steinforth then won the 60m hurdles with a 7.99, placed fourth in the pole vault with a 15-11 (4.85) and ran to third in the 1000m with a PR time of 2:47.08 to secure first place and the Devaney Center record. Matthias Algarin placed fifth in the heptathlon with 5,348 points after clocking an 8.29 in the 60m hurdles, 15-3 (4.65m) in the pole vault and 2:52.97 in the 1000m on Saturday.
In the men’s shot put, Kevin Shubert threw for 65-03 1/4 (19.89m) to finish second overall and first out of collegiate throwers. That mark tied Shubert for third in the NCAA and puts him at eighth in school history. Cade Moran finished third with a distance of 60-1 1/4 (18.32m). Mine De Klerk added a personal-best 58-4 1/2 (17.79m) in the women’s shot put, finishing third overall. That’s the third-best distance in school history and the fifth-best in the NCAA. Kalynn Meyer took fifth with a personal-best 55-0 3/4 (16.78m).
NU swept the top-four spots in the women’s triple jump, led by Rhianna Phipps grabbing first with a 43-2 1/2 (13.17m). That puts Phipps at No. 9 in school history and No. 11 in the NCAA. Ashley McElmurry (4-11 1/2, 12.79m), Velecia Williams (41-1 1/2, 12.53m) and Lotavia Brown (40-6, 12.34m) secured second, third and fourth place for the Huskers. In the men’s triple jump, Terrol Wilson and Jeremiah Charles made it a 1-2 finish for Nebraska with marks of 51-0 (15.54m) and 49-11 1/4 (15.22m). Jaylen Lloyd placed sixth, going for 48-4 (14.73m).
Darius Luff secured the 60m hurdles title with a time of 7.70 to tie him for ninth in the NCAA and second in the Big Ten. Adding a top-three finish, Brithton Senior clocked a 7.79 to place third. Johanna Ilves crossed the line fourth overall and second out of collegiate runners in the 60m hurdles final with a time of 8.40. LaQwasia Stepney joined Ilves in the final, clocking an 8.69 to finish eighth.
In the 800m, Niko Schultz climbed to No. 2 on the all-time list with a 1:48.10 to place second. In the women’s 800m, Hayley Trotter ran a PR 2:14.42 to take seventh. Brynna McQuillen (4:50.77) and Cami Merickel (4:58.98) ran PRs in the mile on their way to second and fifth-place finishes. In the 3000m, Berlyn Schutz ran a 9:37.38 in the women’s race to take third and Sam Kirchner ran a personal-best 8:21.78 in the men’s race to place sixth.
Jenna Rogers secured her third high jump title of the season with a clearance of 6-2 (1.88m). Her height of 6-2 3/4 (1.90m) at the Graduate Classic still ranks third in the NCAA. Brooklyn Miller placed fifth with a mark of 5-7 (1.70m). In the men’s high jump, Tyus Wilson cleared 7-0 1/4 (2.14m) to take fourth.
Kavian Kerr claimed third in the men’s 200m with a 21.45, while Darby Thomas covered the track in 24.16 to finish fifth in the women’s 200m. Lorenzo Paissan cruised to fourth in the men’s 60m final with a 6.83 and Seven Hicks finished seventh in the women’s 60m final with a time of 7.56.
The Husker men (Tyrell Pierce, Nick Bryant, Jacob Hyde, Schultz) ran a season-best 3:09.46 in the 4x400m to win the relay. The women (Abrielle Artley, Rebecca Pecora, Meghan Walker, J. Ilves) ran a 3:43.63 to place third.
Nebraska returns to competition Feb. 9-10 at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. Events begin on Friday at 1:45 p.m. (CT) at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
