Huskers Best UTEP in Second Weekend Match

huskers-2

The No. 8 Nebraska rifle team grabbed its second win of the weekend with a 4,703-4,547 victory over No. 19 UTEP on Sunday.

All six of the top spots were claimed by Huskers. Senior Cecelia Ossi placed first with a 1,178 aggregate score, while junior Mackenzie Strauch finished in second with a 1,178 and sophomore Emma Rhode was third with a 1,176. The tiebreaker between Ossi and Strauch was determined by the number of 10-point shots by each athlete. Freshman Charlotte Mick (1,169, fourth), sophomore Camilla Johannessen (1,165, fifth) and senior Madelynn Erickson (1,159, sixth) rounded out the lineup.

“The team improved in prone today,” Head Coach Mindy Miles said. “We have been struggling in the position, and it was good to see improvement in that area. We pulled some good air scores that averaged well today.”

Five NU athletes shot above a 590 in the air rifle, which is the first time since the Big Red’s match with TCU on Oct. 29. Rhode placed first with a 596, Strauch was second with a 595, and Mick shot a 595 to claim third. Johannessen placed fourth (593), Ossi was fifth (591) and Erickson finished in sixth (585).

In the smallbore, Ossi finished first with a 587. Strauch (583) and Rhode (580) finished second and third, respectively, while Mick (574, fourth), Erickson (574, fifth) and Johannessen (572, sixth) concluded the sweep.

The Huskers will travel to Fort Wayne, Ind., to compete in the Patriot Rifle Conference Championships on Feb. 3-4. For updated times, please check here.
