Huskers Ready for Prairie Wolf Invite, Mark Colligan Memorial

Nebraska track and field continues its season this weekend with two meets hosted at the Devaney Center Indoor Track.

On Friday Jan. 19, 12 Husker men and nine women will take on the Prairie Wolf Indoor Invitational, beginning at 1 p.m.

The full team will compete on Saturday, Jan. 20, as Nebraska hosts Colorado State, Sacramento State, South Dakota and Wichita State at the Mark Colligan Memorial. Field events start at 10:45 a.m. and running events begin at 12 p.m.

Saturday’s Mark Colligan Memorial is the annual “Pepsi Pack the House” event. Admission is $1 and Pepsi products are $1 at the concession stand. The Lil’ Red 60m Dash, a race for ages pre-kindergarten through sixth grade, starts at 11:30 a.m.

Zimmerman Tabbed Big Ten Field Athlete of the WeekNebraska thrower Henry Zimmerman was named the Big Ten Men’s Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 17 by the conference office. On Nebraska’s first day of competition at the Graduate Classic, Zimmerman broke the weight throw school record and recorded the second-best mark in the NCAA this season. He threw a 73-06 (22.40m) on his second attempt to take over Nebraska’s No. 1 spot in the record book, before topping that in his final try with a 73-06.75 (22.42m). Zimmerman didn’t compete last season but placed third in the event at the 2022 Big Ten Championship.

Johansson Named to The Bowerman Preseason Watch ListAxelina Johansson was one of 10 track and field athletes nationally named to The Bowerman 2024 women’s preseason watch list on Tuesday. The Bowerman, presented by the USTFCCCA, is the highest track and field accolade given annually to the most outstanding college male and female athletes. First awarded in 2009, watch lists have been released since 2010.

A four-time All-American, Johansson claimed the 2023 Outdoor NCAA title and Indoor NCAA silver medal in the shot put. The junior from Hok, Sweden swept the Big Ten shot put titles last season, putting up a school record-breaking mark of 64-1 1/4 (19.54m) at the outdoor meet to earn the Big Ten Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year honor. Earlier in the season, Johansson topped the indoor school record book, throwing a 63-4 (19.30m) at the Frank Sevigne Invitational. Her best indoor and outdoor distances also broke the Swedish records.
