Nebraska track and field opened its season on Friday for the first day of the Graduate Classic. Henry Zimmerman highlighted the day at the Devaney Center Indoor Track, breaking a school record and recording the best weight throw mark in the nation this season. Zimmerman threw a 73-06 (22.40m) on his second attempt to take over the No. 1 spot in the record book, before topping that in his final try with a 73-06.75 (22.42m).
Max Herman took third in the men’s weight throw with a mark of 64-09.25 (19.74m) in his first collegiate throw. Cade Moran (62-06, 19.05m) and Seth Schnackenberg (59-03, 18.06m) completed the Huskers in the top five, placing fourth and fifth.
Cammy Garabian cracked the all-time list in her Husker debut, throwing for 65-0 1/2 (19.82m) in the women’s weight throw to win the event. Hillevi Carlsson (61-0, 18.59m) and Ariel Ammentorp (60-6, 18.44m) made it an all Big Red top three, placing second and third.
Jessica Gardner cleared 13-01 1/2 (4.00m) in the women’s pole vault to take the title, while Kylie Clark finished fifth with a 12-1 1/2 (3.70m).
Till Steinforth won the men’s pole vault with a clearance of 16-06 3/4 (5.05m), while Kolby Heinerikson (15-00, 4.65m) placed fourth and Nick Loibl (14-09, 4.50m) took fifth.
In the long jump, Rebecca Pecora finished first during her first time competing for Nebraska, leaping 19-03 1/2 (5.88m). Ashley McElmurry was runner-up, jumping 18-11 1/4 (5.77m).
Heinerikson represented the Huskers in the men’s long jump, placing seventh with a mark of 22-00.25 (6.71m).
The Graduate Classic will resume tomorrow with running events beginning at 10 a.m. (CT) and field events starting at 12:30 p.m. (CT)
