On Nebraska swimming and diving’s opening day at the Hawkeye Invite, Gena Jorgenson kicked off the action with an individual title and an NCAA B Cut.
Gena Jorgenson swam a career-best 4:43.87 in the 500 freestyle to hit NU’s first B standard of the season. The sophomore from Aberdeen, S.D., touched the wall first to claim the title, finishing almost five seconds before second place.
Caterina Bisiacchi joined Jorgenson in the A Final, securing fourth with a strong 4:50.19. Giulia Marchi added a 4:58.77 in the 500 freestyle to take 17th.
In the 200 IM, Sarah Barton finished as runner-up with a tie of 2:02.07. The senior neared her career-best in the prelim with a time of 2:00.28. Maia Hall clocked a 2:03.03 to finish fourth and Sydney McCracken swam a 2:03.60 to take ninth.
JoJo Randby provided Nebraska’s top finish in the 50 freestyle with a career-best 23.10 to take fourth. Emily Haimes added a sixth-place finish with a time of 23.29 and Beatrix Tanko took 10th with a 23.43. Anna Vlachou and Caitlin Cairns finished back-to-back, taking 12th (23.46) and 13th (23.59).
Two Husker relay teams captured second and third in the 400 medley relay. Jorgenson, Randby, Tanko and Haimes teamed up for a second-place finish (3:40.45). Barton, Marchi, Maia Hall and Anna Vlachou posted a time of 3:42.64 to finish third.
In the 200 freestyle relay, Randby, Vlachou, Tanko and Haimes teamed up for a second-place finish (1:31.90).
After one day of competition, the Huskers currently hold second place with a score of 188. The Hawkeyes lead with a score of 229.
Action resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m. (CT) for prelims, with finals to follow at 5 p.m. (CT).
