The public is invited to attend a free class about end-of-life planning Dec. 5 in Grant. The Mid-Plains Community College Ogallala Campus is offering the class, which will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in the commons area of Perkins County High School.
Jason Tickle, Tawna Holmstedt, Kevin Chavira, Michelle Ross, Dennis Demmel and Pam Abbott will lead the discussion, which will cover everything from funeral planning to legal work and how to leave a legacy.
Tickle is the owner and funeral director for Prairie Hills Funeral Home in Ogallala and Julesburg, Colo. and for Bullock-Long Funeral Home in Grant. In the workshop, he will talk about burial versus cremation, open versus closed caskets, organ donation, headstones, venues, music, scriptures, eulogies, photos, obituaries and other pre-planning topics.
Holmstedt is an attorney in the Law Office of R. Kevin O’Donnell, P.C., L.L.O. in Ogallala. She will explain legal documents such as a last will and testament, a revocable living trust, power of attorney, health care power of attorney, living wills and do-not-resuscitate orders.
Chavira is the market president, and Ross is the head teller at Pinnacle Bank in Grant. They will share their expertise about the importance of having financial papers in order. Those include the names of financial institutions, account numbers, beneficiaries, notification of beneficiaries and passwords.
Demmel is president of the Center for Rural Affairs board of directors while Abbott is chair of the Nebraska Community Foundation. They will speak about what it means to leave a legacy. They will also address values, labeling and gifting of tangible items, mentoring, leaving financial contributions to family members, charities and other organizations and the importance of transferring wealth.
