No. 3 Huskers to Face No. 1 WVU and No. 2 TCU This Weekend

The No. 3 Nebraska rifle team travels to Fort Worth, Texas, this weekend to take on the No. 1 West Virginia Mountaineers and the No. 2 TCU Horned Frogs. NU will face both teams on Saturday, Oct. 28 and will have a dual with WVU on Sunday, Oct. 29.

“The athletes utilized their two-week break from competitions well,” Nebraska Head Coach Mindy Miles said. “TCU and WVU are very strong competitors, and I want to see the team’s competitiveness show this weekend.”

In their last dual on Oct. 15, the Huskers defeated No. 6 Air Force by a score of 4,728-4,716. Nebraska’s score was a program high, topping the record of 4,726 set last year against Alaska-Fairbanks. The team’s air rifle score of 2,384 was also a NU best, eclipsing the previous mark of 2,381, which was set last year against Alaska-Fairbanks.

The Huskers also set numerous personal bests against the Falcons. Sophomore Tori Watts placed second overall with a career-high aggregate score of 1,185. Sophomore Emma Rhode was first with a 1,186 and senior Cecelia Ossi finished third with a 1,183.

In the air rifle, Ossi and Rhode both shot 597s, which ties the second-highest score in program history. They tied for first in the event. Junior Mackenzie Strauch shot a personal-best 593 in the discipline to place eighth

Watts earned a first-place finish in the smallbore with a career-best 590, her first career victory in the event. Rhode placed second with a 589, and Ossi was fourth with a 586.

The Horned Frogs have grabbed wins against No. 6 Air Force, No. 9 Georgia Southern, No. 13 Navy and No. 20 VMI. They average a team aggregate score of 4,735.67. Nebraska is 4-22-1 all-time against TCU. The last time the two teams met was on Jan. 21 last season, when the Horned Frogs bested NU 4,744-4,710 in Lincoln. As a collegiate athlete, Miles competed at TCU.

The Mountaineers have defeated No. 8 Ole Miss, No 11. Memphis and No. 12 Akron so far this season and their team aggregate average is 4,745.67. The Huskers are 7-41 against West Virginia all-time. The two teams last met at the 2021 NCAA Championships, where WVU defeated NU 4,704-4,676.

The Mountaineers finished in fifth at last year’s NCAA Championships, while the Horned Frogs earned the silver medal. Nebraska placed sixth.

Following this weekend’s matches, the Huskers will travel to Charleston, S.C., to take on The Citadel on Saturday, Nov. 4.
