1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met for its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. (CDT) Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023, in Room 213 of McMillen Hall on the McCook Community College Campus, 1205 E. Third St., McCook, Neb.
Board Chair Ben Lashley started the meeting with a roll call. In addition to Lashley, those present were MPCC President Ryan Purdy and Board members: Kirk Crawley, Cynthia Duncan, Ted Klug Jr., Ernie Mehl, Kent Miller, Kim Korgan, Tyler Pribbeno and Tricia Schaffer. Jo Etta Brown and Matthew Broz were absent and excused.
Also present were NPCC student trustee Reece Halley and MCC student trustee Graci Nelson.
2. OPEN FORUM (Comments from students, faculty, staff, public and Board)
a. NPCC student trustee Reece Halley and MCC student trustee Graci Nelson reported on student activities in North Platte and McCook.
b. MCC Baseball Head Coach Jon Olsen, MCC Volleyball Head Coach Hayley Kobza and MCC Golf Head Coach Tyler Loop were recognized for their team’s accomplishments over the past year. Baseball had 33 wins during the 2022-23 regular season – the most in the past decade, and the 22-12 record against Region IX opponents was the best-ever. Kobza recently achieved her 150th win and has three players ranked Top 10 in the nation. Golf won every tournament except nationals last spring and ended up 16th in the nation – the team’s best-ever finish.
c. Board member Kent Miller reminded everyone to attend the Nebraska Community College Association Annual Meeting Nov. 5-6 in North Platte.
3. CONSENT ITEMS. On a single consent motion, the board approved:
a. Minutes from the Sept. 27 Board work session, hearings and regular meeting.
b. The preliminary financial report for September.
4. ACTIONS REQUIRED BY LAW
a. The Board approved bills for September in the amount of $2,744,874.40.
b. The Board approved the 2023-26 MPCC Strategic Plan as discussed previously.
c. The Board approved the second and final reading of Board Policy Sections 4000, 5000, 6000 and 7000 as discussed previously.
5. REPORTS
a. Cabinet Reports: The Board heard reports from MPCC President Ryan Purdy, Vice President of Academic Affairs and NPCC Dr. Jody Tomanek, Vice President of Administrative Services Mike Steele, Vice President of Student Affairs and MCC Kelly Rippen, Director of Human Resources Rebecca Wrage and Director of Institutional Advancement Jake Rissler.
6. ADJOURNMENT
Upon hearing no further business, the Board moved to adjourn at 7:18 p.m. The next Board meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Nov. 15 in North Platte.
