On Monday, September 12, 2022, the Nebraska First PAC released the first set of senators and candidates for the Nebraska Legislature who have signed pledges to make all votes for leadership positions in the Unicameral public. According to a press release from Nebraska First PAC; in total, 17 current members and 17 candidates for Legislature have already made this commitment. The current signers represent 30 of the 49 districts, including 4 districts where both candidates up for election have signed the pledge. Among those signing the pledge is Speaker Mike Hilgers also a favorite for Nebraska Attorney General, longtime Revenue Chair Senator Lou Ann Linehan. Along with District 42 Senator Mike Jacobson and Lincoln County Commissioner / District 42 Candidate Chris Bruns. And Western Nebraska Senators Tom Brewer and Steve Erdman.

“We started off by concentrating on the current senators and candidates who will be on the ballot this fall,” commented Nebraska First PAC Director Rod Edwards. “We have sent emails to everyone who has contact information available and have been making follow up calls. We will continue to reach out until we know that every senator and candidate who may be serving in the Unicameral starting in January of 2023 are contacted. We want all senators and candidates to know their opportunity to pledge transparency with Nebraska voters.” Nebraska First has set a September 29, 2022, deadline to return the signed Transparency in Leadership Pledges. Updated lists of those committed to this pledge will be listed weekly at www.NebraskaFirst.net. A final list, after September 29, 2022, will include those who have signed the pledge and those who have refused to sign.

Voters in each legislative district up for election in 2022 will be informed on where the candidates stand on transparency with the upcoming leadership votes. “It is pretty simple. Either our legislators support being transparent with their votes or they want to keep the back room deals that come with electing leadership by secret ballot. We believe voters support transparency and will support candidates who do too,” added Edwards.
