Unused Summer EBT Funds Expiration Starts Soon

Lincoln, NE – The first round of Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) benefits, issued on April 23, 2025, will be expiring on August 23, 2025. Any unused benefits from the first round of Summer EBT funds will expire and must be returned to the federal government. Households have until 11:59 p.m. on August 22, 2025, to use the benefits. Summer EBT funds can be used to purchase nutritious foods at grocery stores, online food retailers, and farmer’s markets that accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) EBT.

Future expiration dates include:

  • May 15 issuance: September 14, 2025
  • June 5 issuance: October 5, 2025
  • June 26 issuance: October 26, 2025
  • July 17 issuance: November 16, 2025

Families who receive Summer EBT funds have 122 days, or four months, to use Summer EBT benefits. The 122-day count begins the day after benefits are issued. If benefits are not used within 122 days, funds will be returned to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and cannot be reissued. The cutoff date for requesting a replacement card is 14 days, or two weeks, before the benefit expiration date.

If you need a replacement Summer EBT card, the following options are available:

  • Calling EBT Edge (if your address has not changed) at 877-247-6328.
    • Report the card as lost/stolen/damaged.
    • When asked for a date of birth, use the child’s date of birth that activated the card.
    • For the social security number, enter “0000.”
    • After being transferred to a customer service representative, provide the account number.
