(release from NP Police Department)
On Friday, July 25th, at 7:02 PM officers were dispatched to the intersection of 6th St. and Jeffers St. on the report of a motorcycle accident involving injuries. It was determined that 26-year-old Tyler Irish was north bound on Jeffers riding a motorcycle. A bicyclist, 45-year-old Derrick Harrison, was westbound on 6th St. Harrison went around vehicles stopped at the stop sign on 6th St and entered the intersection continuing westbound.
Another vehicle was northbound in the right lane and likely concealed the northbound motorcycle, traveling in the inside lane, from the bicyclist. As the bicyclist entered the inside northbound lane, Tyler Irish observed the bicycle and braked hard. Irish was unable to avoid a collision with Harrison.
After the collision between the motorcycle and bicycle, Irish began to fall from the motorcycle and struck a metal pole that holds a sign indicating a divided highway at the south end of the Jeffers St. viaduct.
Arriving officers performed CPR and utilized an AED until North Platte Fire Department arrived and took over. Irish was transported to Great Plains Health where he was pronounced dead.
Harrison was also transported to Great Plains Health and is currently being treated for his injuries.
The Nebraska State Patrol assisted in the investigation.
