
| Halsey, N.E. (April 23, 2026)— The Andrews Fire was reported on April 22, 2026 at approximately 6:36 PM on the Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest. The current estimated burn area is 2500 acres and is being managed by Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands wildland fire crews. The fire has been burning in the north central area of the McKelvie National Forest in grass fuels.
Crews worked through the night with successful suppression efforts and are currently seeing minimal activity. Current strategy for today and the following days will be patrolling, mop-up, and monitoring the burned and active fire areas. Firefighters doing mop-up is a critical part of wildland fire efforts, firefighters extinguish hot spots to prevent reignition. There are multiple active new wildfires adjacent to the McKelvie National Forest that US Forest Service wildland fire crews, along with local, state, and federal agencies are assisting with in the area. There is currently a Red Flag Warning in effect through 8:00 PM today, April 23, 2026. Strong winds are forecast to continue throughout today.
