
New Castle, Del. – The No. 3 Nebraska bowling team went 5-0 in their second day of competition at the Northeast Classic, bringing its overall tournament record to 10-0 with 10,779 total pinfall, as the Huskers remained in first place.
NU matched up with No. 21 UAB in its first traditional match of the day and started with Friday’s lineup consisting of Haley Swindle, Karina Capron, Kayla Verstraete, Anna Callan and Jillian Martin. The Cornhuskers were led by Callan with nine strikes and a score of 225. The freshman Capron followed close behind with a 223. Martin added a 197, and Swindle (196) and Verstraete (192) rounded out the lineup. Nebraska held a 11 strike advantage over the Dragons and defeated UAB, 1,033-907, to start the day 1-0, and moving to 6-0 on the tournament weekend.
The Big Red faced off against Dominican in match two. The Huskers tallied 27 strikes, eight coming from both Martin (233) and Capron (222) respectively. Callan added an 181, and Swindle scored a 162. NU substituted Kayla Starr for Verstraete in the ninth frame and the freshman came in and got two strikes of her own and finished with a 162. The Cornhuskers took down the Stars, 968-892, improving to 2-0 on day two.
In match three, the Huskers went up against Wright State. All five Huskers tallied at least six strikes in the match and Martin (268) began the match with seven consecutive strikes and finished with 10 to lead Nebraska. Callan (215) and Buchert (214) both recorded seven strikes respectively. Capron added an 182 to the team score as NU put up 37 strikes total to defeat the Raiders, 1,092-972.
Nebraska took on No. 17 Mount St. Mary’s in match four of the day. Capron started off the match with nine strikes and put up a 266. Callan (231) added an additional nine strikes and Starr scored a 208. Martin (203) and Buchert (190) rounded out the lineup as the Huskers used a later match strike barrage to get past Mount St. Mary’s, 1,098-966, staying a perfect 4-0 going into the fifth match.
In the final match of day two, the Cornhuskers played No. 23 Felician. All Huskers reached the 200-pin mark with Buchert leading the way for Nebraska with a 244, followed closely by Martin (243) who tallied 10 strikes for the second time today. Starr added a 238 to the score and Callan (212) and Capron (208) rounded out the Big Red squad. NU defeated the Golden Falcons, 1,145-1009, ending the day 5-0.
Three Huskers currently sit in the top 30 for individual performances. Martin is fourth overall with a total pinfall of 1,144 and a 228.8 average. Capron is in 13th with a total pinfall of 1,101 and average of 220.2. Callan sits at 26th with a total pinfall of 1,064 and a 212.8 average.
The Huskers return to the lanes tomorrow morning at 7:25 a.m. (CT) against No. 2 Jacksonville State in a best 4-of-7 baker match followed by two additional best 4-of-7 baker matches for final placements.
