MARCH 27, 2026 — The American Red Cross continues to support Nebraskans affected by recent wildfires, with trained volunteers working alongside local partners as conditions continue to shift. As wildfire activity remains, the Red Cross is prepared to adjust and expand its support as necessary.
A shelter is open at Hyannis High School (322 E. Highway 2, Hyannis, NE 69350) where displaced residents are receiving meals and other immediate assistance. Volunteers are on site to ensure individuals and families have a safe place to go during evacuations.
From the onset of the fires, Red Cross teams have been deployed in impacted areas to provide essential assistance to residents. Dozens of volunteers are actively involved in the response, delivering vital services, supplies and expertise to meet community needs.
To date, the Red Cross has served nearly 2,000 meals and snacks and distributed over 280 emergency relief supplies as part of the wildfire response.
Red Cross health services volunteers are addressing the physical health needs of those affected, while mental health volunteers are providing emotional support as residents navigate the stress and uncertainty caused by the fires.
As it is safe to do so, volunteers are conducting residential damage assessments to help determine longer-term recovery needs.
Individuals affected by the wildfires can contact the Red Cross for assistance by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767). The free Red Cross Emergency App also provides real-time alerts, shelter locations and safety information.
Throughout the response, the Red Cross remains in close communication with emergency management officials across the region, monitoring fire conditions and standing ready to increase support as new needs emerge.
