Stories from the Morrill Fire

The Morrill Fire has burned over 572,000 acres and has destroyed land and structures stretching through Keith, Arthur, Grant, Garden and Morrill Counties. Many up-close stories are emerging from this devastating blaze, and Huskeradio’s Corey Andersen was able to visit with Sara Cover with the VanNewkirk Ranch just east of Oshkosh. Sara says the whole town has pulled together:

“the community rallying together, the amount of food and drinks that are at the firehall…the giving has been overwhelming. It’s just been the experience of a lifetime from the level of sadness and devastation to the amount of generosity”

Cover said she talked with a rancher on the west end of the fire who lost everything but his house:

“they looked up and it(the fire) was coming through the yard. The wife ran in the house and sat in the shower, and luckily they had a stucco house and it just burned right around and kept going. ‘Cause the wind was going 60 miles an hour.”
