Many stories will emerge from the past week regarding the area Cottonwood and Morrill fires and one local rancher told Huskeradio his journey recently. Trey Wasserburger, owner of TD Angus Ranch had an up-close and personal journey with both fires as he tells Huskeradio’s Corey Andersen.
Wasserburger was called to help with the start of the Cottonwood Fire on Thursday, but then also had a friend near the start of the Morrill Fire call to provide updates and ask support for helping it later in the week. He said the devastation is vast.
“There’s a lot of these stories where I just don’t think anybody escaped it. You either know a friend, a neighbor, a nephew – it’s just a very small community and very, very small region and industry. It’s going to be pretty devastating.”
Wasserburger said he had spoken with elected officials who already have estimates that the damage could lead to a billion dollar loss. He also said the terrain of the fire made it difficult to control.
“I’ve been on fifty fires in my life and I’ve never seen anything like it. The canyon grounds are so rough and so hard, it’s not like you can get a disk out there and start disking around it and get in front of it. And the wind was switching and was unrelenting for two or three days. It burned every acre in sight.”
