McCook, Neb. – The North Platte women’s basketball team was defeated by McCook Community College, 57–41, in its Region 9 South opener Saturday afternoon.
“We must have a better start to games this semester, especially in region play,” said head coach Jeff Thurman. “I’m proud of our effort on the defensive end in the second half, it just was not enough.”
North Platte got on the scoreboard at the 7:10 mark of the first quarter when Kyenna Jackson knocked down a jumper to make it 5-2. The Knights picked up the rest of their points from the free-throw line, as the deficit grew to 11 at the end of the opening quarter.
The second quarter opened with a tightly contested stretch, as North Platte limited McCook to just three additional points early. However, the Indians closed the half on a 10–0 run, heading into halftime with a commanding 36-12 advantage.
North Platte found some offensive rhythm in the third quarter, as a long-range shot by Aliyah Herron ignited a 7-0 run. The surge helped North Platte trim the deficit to 18 points heading into the final frame.
Despite even scoring in the final period, the Knights were only able to shave two points off the Indians lead by the end of regulation.
North Platte (3-12) returns home on Friday against Trinidad State College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. inside the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.
