Big Springs, Neb. – Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) recently donated $1,000 to South Platte Public Schools’ physical education program.

South Platte received the donation from BCBSNE for taking the pledge to participate in the company’s annual National Walk at Lunch (NW@L) Day event, which brings Nebraskans across the state together to walk for 30 minutes.

Walking provides a variety of health benefits, including reduced stress and increased energy levels, according to the Mayo Clinic. On NW@L Day each year, going for a stroll also supports the community, because BCBSNE donates $1,000 to one participating school’s physical education department. This year, South Platte was randomly selected to receive the donation from a list of 32 participating schools.

“National Walk at Lunch Day shows how even small steps can lead to big impact,” said Caroline Kahnk, well-being coordinator at BCBSNE. “We’re proud to support South Platte Public Schools and the educators helping students build lifelong wellness habits.”

BCBSNE representatives recently celebrated the award with South Platte Public Schools’ staff and students. South Platte will use the funds to purchase new fitness equipment, including jump ropes and weighted balls.

“We are excited that something as simple as walking a little extra at lunch can earn some much-needed items for our physical education program,” Lisa Wilson, South Platte Public Schools’ business manager, said. “We are grateful to BCBSNE for investing back in the community.”

New this year, BCBSNE also pledged to make a $1,000 donation to a participating nonprofit. The Latino Center of the Midlands was randomly selected to receive this donation.

Additionally, BCBSNE continued its tradition of donating $5,000 to Special Olympics Nebraska for meeting its NW@L Day registration goal of 10,000 participants. The 2025 event surpassed this goal, with approximately 15,660 Nebraskans pledging to participate.
