AUDIO: Stapleton Cowboy Becomes World Champion

A senior-to-be at Stapleton High School this year is now a world champion in steer roping after claiming the title at the National High School Finals Rodeo in Gillette, Wyoming this past weekend. Coy Johnston had the fastest time in steer roping at 13.79, a cumulative score after his three runs. Second place was Drew Clukey of Robertsdale, Alabama, with a time of 14.87.

Johnston’s first run of the entire rodeo was the first steer wrestling of all contestants and it proved to be his fastest at 4.14. Johnston, 18, said he plans to attend college after graduating from Stapleton and hopes to one day be in the NFR (National Finals Rodeo).
