North Platte Finishes 2nd, Sutherland 4th at State Wrestling

Day one and two has finished from the State Wrestling Championships in Omaha and North Platte is coming home with a runner-up finish as a team, placing behind only champion Millard South. The Bulldogs, highlighted by a pair of state champions, finished with 136 team points.

Individually, Gavyn Brauer and Vincent Genatone came home with golds, going 4-0. Brauer won his title match by fall over Lucas Night of Millard North at 182 points, while Genatone finished at 195 pounds with a win by decision over Omaha Westside’s Cole Haberman. North Platte also got a 2nd place finish from Darian Diaz, two 3rd-place finishes from Jaylan Ruffin and Brock Little and a 5th-place finish from Ryan Fox.

Class D was highlighted by the Sutherland Sailors in the area, as they claimed a 4th-place team finish, finishing with 73 points, just behind 2nd-place Palmer and Southwest, who tied. Plainview won the Class D title, with 110.5 points.

Individually for the Sailors, Samuel Foster and Gavin White finished in 3rd, leading the way. But all five Sailors finished in the top 5 of their respective classes, with Jon Peterka getting 4th and Cauy Morgan and Hunter Cook both getting 5th.

Other individual champions from the area included Jeremy Larson of Brady, who finished his year undefeated with a state title, the first ever for Brady Schools. Larson won the title at 132 points.

Sandhills-Thedford finished with several medal winners, including Reece Zutavern who won this 182 pound title match over Cooper Slingsby of Ansley-Litchfield. Teammate Brayton Branic also claimed gold as he won at 285 pounds for gold.

Sandhills Valley was led by Dayton Gipe, who finished in 2nd place, falling in the title match to Scout Ashburn of Plainview.

Maxwell was led by Luke Howitt, who claimed runner-up, losing in this title match at 220 pounds to Perkins County’s Brandon Knowles.
