A new government funded study indicates there is no difference between opioids and common over-the-counter medications for some types of pain. Dr. Michael Lankhorst is a pain medicine specialist at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine in Omaha and says this was a well done study.
Lankhorst says they have been following this practice for the past few years and only prescribe opioids for short term use. If there is long term chronic pain there are other options or they can look at other treatment methods. He says people can build up a tolerance to opioids but that isn’t a problem with medications like Tylenol or ibuprofen.
