County to Pay for Deputies Insurance

After 2 hours of debate and a tense meeting the Deuel County Commissioners voted to pay for Deputy Mike “Hutch” Hutchinson’s families insurance.  In the deal, Hutchinson would receive $1,500 to obtain health insurance from the Marketplace, which will cover them for the next 10 months.

Hutchinson was shot in the line of duty in December of 2015 while serving a warrant in Big Springs. In May, him and his wife received word their health coverage, through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska, would be terminated at the end of the month due to him not working more than 30 hours a week.

Hutchinson is still unable to return to work as he has battled infection and is not mentally or physically ready for work. He has not been cleared by doctors either.

The injuries suffered in December are being covered under workers compensation where Hutchinson also receives 66% of his paycheck. His wife, Karyl, is unable to work due to several trips to doctors and to also help Hutch while he is at home.
